Q&A with Dave and Jenny Marrs of HGTV’s Fixer to Fabulous
Dave and Jenny Marrs, of HGTV’s Fixer to Fabulous, focus on restoring historic homes in their Bentonville, Arkansas neighborhood. Dave does all the heavy lifting, and Jenny does the design. They face many challenges, but there is nothing this couple can’t handle. The husband-and-wife duo will be appearing at The Great Big Home + Garden Show on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 3 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 9th at 1 p.m., courtesy of Absolute Roofing & Construction, Inc. Before they do, they answered a few questions about design trends, current projects and more!
Q: What home gadget or tool should every homeowner own?
A: A tape measure
Q: Are you a plant fanatic, or is your green thumb lacking?
A: Jenny: I love plants and have them throughout our home. Dave built me a plant shelf for our south-facing window where my plants thrive. Dave is also an avid gardener and has the best green thumb from many years of learning from his Grandma Marrs.
Q: Tips for incorporating a new design trend into your home?
A: As long as you aren’t making structural changes, you can incorporate new trends through paint, art, accessories and furniture. These can all be easily changed if and when you tire of the trend.
Q: What is one project you tell people to NOT do as DIY?
A: Structural changes to your home are best executed by a professional contractor.
Q: What’s your favorite paint color?
A: I use Farrow & Ball’s “Drop Cloth" most often. I also love Farrow and Ball’s “Pigeon” for a fun, unexpected pop of color, particularly on millwork.
Q: What do you recommend as a rule of thumb for mixing patterns or materials (i.e., metals) in design and décor projects?
A: Stick to three materials and/or paint colors in your project. Try not to add in any more than three different elements and have a grounding color story to anchor the entire space.
Q: When you design a room, what is the most important interior design advice you give?
A: I always ask my clients to think about how they want to use the room and how they want to feel when they’re in the room. Then, start with a focal point and work from there (it can be a fireplace, beautiful range, meaningful piece of art). Choose your color palette based on how you want to feel in the space (calming colors or vibrant…warm tones…etc.).
Q: What project are you currently working on?
A: We are building out our new retail location. Set in a historic building in our town’s downtown square, we are creating cozy rooms inside of a formerly large “warehouse” feeling space. The shop will feature our favorite home goods from our favorite local and global artisans. It’s a small business supporting other small businesses and encouraging shoppers to appreciate beautiful, handcrafted items.
